Mavromati-lthomi
Mavromati (32 km from Kalamata) is one of the many painting villas in the center of Messinia. It is built like an amphitheater above the foot of Itomi's sacred mountain. Today it is called Voulkano and there is a sanctuary of Zeus Ithomatos.
One of the legends supported that Zeus was born in Itomi, not Crete and Olympus. In Itomi, it was raised by two nymphs, Itomi and Neda. Water jumps out of the mountain center from the rock face black hole in the center of the village. This is where Mavromati got its name. Mavromati means black eyes.
