
I looked back on the history of hats and hats and overlooked ambiguous and unusual words. Recently, after reading the professor and Madman (Simon Winchester, HarperCollins 1998) about the production of the Oxford English dictionary, I thought it might be fun to examine the definitions and etymology of these classic terms. I was disappointed with the contemporary use. [I'll breakup this project into three or four parts, so stay tuned.]
